Board of Education adopts assessment relief resolution for 'Irene' and 'Lee' victims

March 8: Deadline for property owners to submit request for property tax relief to their assessor

(Jan. 26, 2012) At its Jan. 23 meeting, the Voorheesville Central School District Board of Education adopted a resolution to extend property tax relief for flood victims of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

The Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee Assessment Relief Act was signed into law on December 9, 2011. The new law allows taxing jurisdictions – counties, cities, towns, villages and school districts – to allow catastrophically damaged property to be reassessed on the 2011 assessment role. Properties that lost 50 percent or more of their value are considered catastrophically impacted.

The law set a deadline of Jan. 23, 2012 for municipalities and school districts to opt into the program, by board resolution. Property owners have until March 8, 2012 to submit a written request to the assessor along with supporting documentation demonstrating the damage to the property caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. The assessor will determine the percentage loss in value and notify the property owner of the determination.
